Abstract

Excavated from 1977 onwards by the Italian mission of the Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi of Turin as part of the salvage operations in the Hamrin basin, Tell Yelkhi has proved to be one of the major sites in the region. For the Paleo-Babylonian period in particular, it is characterized by a large palace and administrative structures that functioned as a collection and redistribution center for local produce. After falling under the influence ofEšnunna, the settlement remained a regional reference point. Some one hundred Palaeo-Babylonian tablets uncovered by the Italian mission have been the subject of studies devoted to texts, onomastics and chronology, but no complete publication with translation and commentary is yet available.

Almost 40 years after its discovery, in the light of the new data and tools at our disposal, we take stock of the available documentation, in order to reopen a discussion on the sources of Tell Yelkhi and its role in the Hamrin region.
