Abstract

This lecture will show how functional trait approaches can be used to understand the mechanisms by which biodiversity affects ecosystem functioning, in particular through functional diversity. These mechanisms will be presented for the effects of plant biodiversity on carbon and nutrient cycles, trophic interactions and ecosystem stability. Ultimately, the aim is to understand how functional diversity enables multiple simultaneous functions, or multifunctionality.
