Abstract

One of our first projects focused on untranslatable terms in the cultural heritage of sub-Saharan Africa.

With the help of the African Academy of Languages, we sought to understand the distortions at play between French, English, Fulfulde, and Bamanakan, as well as the ways of expressing what French terms “nature,” “culture,” “museum,” or “restitution.” I will draw on a few significant examples, exploring various possibilities that open up new horizons and foster different relationships.
