Abstract
Antoine Compagnon, Professor at the Collège de France, has analyzed the significance for our relationship with ancient texts of the choice made by the most recent editors of Montaigne to no longer follow the Bordeaux edition, but to return, as was done in the past, to the posthumous edition of Marie de Gournay. He suggested that it would be reasonable, today, to make Montaigne easier to read by rejuvenating the spelling and dividing the text into paragraphs, while providing abundant annotation and critical apparatus, whereas the tendency is to reserve this apparatus for scholarly editions and deliver the rejuvenated text naked.
