Abstract

Historically, epidemics in humans and animals have been studied and modeled independently. This approach is being challenged by the “One Health” concept, an integrated approach that recognizes that human health, animal health, and the state of ecosystems are interdependent. Similarly, a wealth of literature models the dynamics of infection within the host, yet there has been little integration of these findings into epidemic models. In this course, I will discuss the value of building bridges between these related fields, whether through multispecies modeling via the One Health concept or multiscale modeling via the development of models that account for both host-level infection dynamics and population-level transmission dynamics.
