Abstract
The simplest mathematical models assume “homogeneous mixing,” in which each individual has the same probability of coming into contact with any other individual in the population. In practice, this assumption is often challenged because contacts are strongly structured by individuals’ ages (people generally have more contact with those in their own age group), geography, social networks, and so on. In this course, I will explain how mathematical models have gradually become more complex to better account for the impact of population structure on the transmission of infectious diseases.
