He received his AB from Harvard in 1986 (Summa cum laude), his M.Phil from Cambridge University in 1987, and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1993. His research combines experimental biomechanics and physiology, paleontology and comparative anatomy to study how and why the human body is the way it is. He teaches a variety of courses on human evolution, anatomy and physiology and has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and three books: The Evolution of the Human Head (2011), The History of the Human Body: Evolution, Dysevolution, and New Diseases (2013), and Exercised: The Science of Physical Activity, Rest and Health (2020). His next book is on the evolution of human nutrition. He also enjoys running.
